FIGURE 36. Variations of single-rod coiling and rim construction among baleen baskets.

Motifs. Decorative substitutions of light for dark material are made as follows.

Light baleen is (1) substituted for weft strands in encircling revolutions, either continuous or broken; (2) substituted for all weft strands on basket; (3) added as a strip over rod revolution; or (4) substituted for some wefts, with added weft stitch to form a cross-stitch pattern.

Bird quill is (1) substituted in small “flecks” of one or two stitches, with flecks distributed over all the basket surface; (2) substituted in larger, isolated geometric units; or (3) substituted in single encircling revolutions on small baskets.
